Land for Sale in Virginia
Are you dreaming of a slower-paced, rural way of life? Do rolling green pastures dotted with grazing livestock trigger a longing to be a farmer? Perhaps you long for scenic mountaintop vistas or a relaxing coastal lifestyle. If so, you may want to consider calling Virginia home.
Land for sale in VA is famous for the beauty of its countryside and the warm Southern charm of its people. Major cities include Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake on the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the capital of Richmond on the gently rolling Piedmont, and Charlottesville and Roanoke bordering the western mountains. Those mountains include the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the great Appalachian Mountain Chain that stretches for nearly 2,000 miles from eastern Canada to Alabama.
The Monongahela, George Washington & Jefferson, and Cherokee National Forests are part of a wide swath of scenic woodlands sweeping from the northeast to the southwest along the eastern slopes of those mountains. This ruggedly beautiful 'backbone' separates the state from neighboring West Virginia. This is ideal timber country and the sustainable forests of the Appalachians produce some of the country's finest hardwoods.
It's no wonder that forestry is a major industry in Virginia. In fact, forestry and agriculture together account for the vast majority of the state’s private industry. Agricultural products account for $70 billion of the state's economy, with timber adding another $21 billion. Together, these two industries employ more than 442,000 Virginians. Each job in agriculture and timbering also supports another 1.7 jobs in related industries within the state. That's a sizeable percentage of the state's population of 8,470,020 people.
Virginia's mountain ridges, rolling hills, central plateau, and coastal plains are home to 44,800 farms producing a diverse range of products on an average of 181 acres. These products include leaf tobacco, apples, grapes, peanuts, tomatoes, cotton, turkeys, and broiler chickens. According to the 2016 USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) report, Virginia is in the top 15 producers of each of these products nationwide. It's actually in the top ten for all of them except cotton.
Other economically important crops include cattle, milk, greenhouse and nursery products, potatoes, grain corn, soybeans, wheat, hay, and Christmas trees.
Canada, China, and Switzerland are major importers of Virginia's agricultural and forestry products and have been for many years. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has a global network of international trade representatives successfully promoting the state's products to the rest of the world, as well.
If you're new to farming, the Virginia Beginning Farmer & Rancher Coalition (VBFRC) can help you realize your dream of owning a successful farm. They will help you develop a 'whole farm' plan and will provide mentoring by experienced farmers. They also provide training, online resources, and a supportive social network.
